The Licensing Timeline: What to Expect
Becoming a foster parent is one of the most meaningful decisions you can make. At Restore Therapeutic Foster Care, we want to make the licensing process as simple, clear, and supportive as possible. While the journey may sound overwhelming at first, our team walks with you every step of the way.
Here’s a look at what the process typically looks like — broken down into three phases, usually completed within 90 days.
Phase 1 – Kickoff (Weeks 1–2)
Your journey begins with a first interview. This is our chance to connect, hear your story, and answer your initial questions. We’ll also:
Talk through the application process.
Discuss required forms and documents.
Get you set up in our online Parent Portal
Schedule your first home visit.
Within two weeks, you’ll complete your initial paperwork, including items like your application, family routine form, financial statement, safety plans, and a copy of your driver’s license. Don’t worry — we’ll guide you through each piece.
Phase 2 – Screening (Weeks 3–6)
Next comes your first home study interview. This is where we get to know your family more deeply, walk through your home together, and explain safety standards.
You’ll also receive a new set of tasks to complete within four weeks, such as:
First Aid/CPR Training
Background checks
Health statement from your doctor
TB screening
This phase ensures that your home is safe, your paperwork is in order, and you’re well-prepared for the next steps.
Phase 3 – Training (Weeks 7–13)
During this phase, you’ll complete your pre-service training sessions while continuing with the home study process.
Home Study Interview 2 (Weeks 7–9): We’ll continue the conversation, review your progress, and begin training.
Home Study Interview 3 (Weeks 10–13): We’ll finalize the study, review your training, and talk about placement, trauma-informed parenting, and crisis response.
You’ll also attend a series of training sessions covering trauma, child development, and practical strategies for foster parenting.
The process ends with Orientation & Graduation, where we celebrate your commitment and officially license you as a foster parent.
From Start to Finish: Support Every Step of the Way
